Aldridge was recorded as a settlement in the Domesday Book of 1086, though the now much larger settlement of Walsall was not. It was valued at 15 shillings under the name of “Alrewic” which may have originated from an abundance of alder trees in the area. Aldridge began as a small agricultural settlement with farming being the most common occupation up until the 19th century. In the 20th century, new housing and industrial estates were developed and in 1974 Aldridge became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. The core of historic Aldridge remains, preserved in a conservation area, an affluent area with several large private residences.

During the 20th century modern shops were built in the centre of Aldridge; most of the town’s shops are located either on High Street, Anchor Road, or in the shopping area known as “The Parade” including Morrison’s  supermarket, WH Smith, a library, a bakery, hair salons and various restaurants, although many other shopping options exist at nearby Mere Green and Sutton Coldfield as well as in Walsall, Birmingham and Lichfield. Aldridge has a cricket and hockey club called “The Stick and Wicket” a rugby football club and various football clubs throughout the area. Druids Heath golf club is located off Stonnall Road, with Calderfields, Great Barr, Aston Wood and Little Aston also being situated close by. For outdoor recreation Aldridge has The Croft close to the town centre, the Arboretum in Walsall and Sutton Park, one of Europe’s largest urban parks with opportunities for golf, walking and a range of other outdoor activities.
